Sally Lunn, The Baker of Bath

Sally Lunn’s is a Historic Eating House and Tea Room set in the oldest house in Bath, Somerset England. It is famous for serving the Sally Lunn Bun, a delicacy originally brought to Bath in 1680 by the Huguenot refugee Solange Luyon (later anglicised to Sally Lunn) and still made to her original recipe. The building itself is an excavation site which can be dated back to Roman times, with fragments in the North Cellar indicating that a structure such as a Roman Inn may have been in use over 1800 years ago. It doesn’t get any more old world British than this.
The infamous Sally Lunn Bun is difficult to describe; it is part cake, part bun, part bread, and very light. It has the distinct characteristics of a yeasted roll, but with a hint of sweetness and lemon. So, getting a bun delivered to your address may be impossible, but you can try this prepared bread mix for a bread machine or oven. It can be served with a sweet topping such as butter and British Jam or a savory topping of toasted goat’s cheese. If traveling all the way to the Somerset countryside is not a possibility, there are still ways to enjoy a taste from this historic location. Paul Hollywood, Master Baker and Judge of the British Baking Competition, has perfected his own recipe of the Sally Lunn Bun.
